The day after exercising, I ache all over.

When beginning a new exercise regime, it is important to start slowly and build up gradually. Aim to work at a level which is hard enough to take you out of your comfort zone, but not so hard that you are struggling for breath. It is common to feel some muscle soreness after a new or different exercise class, but this should decrease rapidly once your muscles begin to adapt to the new demands you are placing on them. Of course, if any severe pain is felt during exercise, it is best to lower the intensity of the exercise immediately and inform the instructor.

I feel self-conscious about starting a new exercise class

It's natural to feel a bit apprehensive when starting something new, but once the music begins, people generally concentrate intensely on the instructor or their own performance, rather than what other people in the class are doing. Chances are, you're not the only person in the room who is feeling a little nervous. The hardest part of an exercise class is getting through the door. Once you're there, the instructor will ensure that everyone enjoys and benefits from their workout.
