Tai Chi Chi Kung (also known as Chi Gung or Qi Gong) is a form of dynamic meditation dating back to the 26th Century BC. It uses a series of gentle, flowing movements and controlled breathing to produce a vast range of benefits to both the mind and body.
The Roots of Chi Kung
The roots of Chi Kung lie within tribal dances, designed to reflect animal movements within ceremonies. Initially designed to aid blood circulation,
the dance movements were gradually combined with techniques such as tapping, self massage and stretching, to help alleviate the pressures of the time, caused by wars and environmental hardships.
Gradually the concept of Chi (Qi) as an energy or life force became more prevalent and this put more importance on controlling the breathing as a method of balancing both mind and body.
Nowadays there are a number of styles of Tai Chi being taught and practised, some slow, gentle and relaxed, while others are more powerful, even including weapons.
All are concerned with strengthening the energy of both mind and body, balancing the two opposing forces of Yin and Yang and unblocking the energy meridians around the body to allow free flow of Chi.
Many health benefits have been reported by regular performers of Tai Chi. Indeed, Tai Chi is widely used in the East as a treatment for and prevention against many ailments, both physical and mental.
Reported benefits include:
- Improved balance and posture; offering important protection against falls in the elderly
- Increased flexibility and strength, aligning the body and improving control and awareness
- Strengthened immune and nervous systems
- Feelings of calmness and well-being; better ability to cope with stress
- Improved sleep quality leading to increased energy
- Better digestion and improved metabolism
- Relief of high blood pressure, asthma and Type 2 Diabetes
